Depending on the trigger, hives can last in duration from a few hours to a week. Acute urticaria is urticaria (hives) that is present for less than six weeks.
It is characterised by weals and sometimes angioedema, and resolves within hours to days. Urticaria affects up to one in four people at some time in their lives and can be classified by duration, acute or chronic, and by cause, whether spontaneous or inducible. Two or more different subtypes of urticaria may co-exist in one person. Acute urticaria is the daily or episodic occurrence of weals, angioedema, or both, for under 6 weeks.
